What Is a Grade Calculator?
A grade calculator is an online tool that works out your overall course grade from your individual scores. Many teachers weight categories differently, for example homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25% and final exam 35%, which makes it hard to calculate by hand. This tool does the maths instantly and also converts the result into a letter grade.
How to Calculate Your Grade
Weighted grade formula
Weighted Grade = (Score₁ × Weight₁ + Score₂ × Weight₂ + …) ÷ Total Weight
Each score is first turned into a percentage (points earned ÷ points possible × 100). For example, a quiz score of 45/50 is 90%. If quizzes are worth 20% of the course, they add 0.90 × 20 = 18 points to your final grade.
Points-based grade formula
Grade = Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible × 100
If you scored 430 out of 500 points across the semester, your grade is 86%.
How to Calculate the Final Exam Score You Need
Needed Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Example: your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 30% and you want a 90% overall. Needed score = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%. That is above 100%, so a 90% overall is not possible without extra credit. Use the calculator above to test other targets.
