What Is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a number that summarises your academic performance by converting each letter grade into grade points and averaging them, weighted by credit hours. Schools, colleges and universities use GPA for honors, scholarships, admissions and graduation requirements. Your CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the average across all semesters, not just one.

GPA Formula

The formula is simple:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points for a course are its credit hours multiplied by the grade points. For example, a 3-credit course with an A (4.0) gives 12 quality points. If you take that course plus a 4-credit course with a B (3.0, so 12 quality points), your GPA is (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

How to Use This GPA Calculator

Choose your grading scale, then enter the name, credit hours and grade for each course. Press Calculate GPA to see your semester GPA, total credits and quality points. To get your cumulative GPA, enter your previous GPA and completed credits in the CGPA calculator. To plan ahead, use the Target GPA Planner to see what average you need in your remaining credits.

Weighted vs Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every course equally, with a maximum of 4.0. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so the maximum can go above 4.0. Tick the weighted option above to include these bonuses. Check your school's policy, because the exact bonus can vary.

A-3.7C2.0

Some universities, including many in Pakistan and under HEC guidelines, use 3.67 for A-, 3.33 for B+ and so on. Select the matching scale in the calculator to get the correct result.
